All-Time Dodger Jersey Numbers... Episode One

This is gonna be an ongoing series where I run down jersey numbers 0-99 and determine who I think are the greatest Dodgers to ever wear that number. Each week, I will use the random number generator to give me a number to dive in to. This week, we got number 48 and I could only think of one Dodger to wear that number off the top of my head. The number #48 has been fielded in 39 different seasons since 1952 for the Dodgers. 24 players have worn #48 since 1952 and no one wore it between 2002 and 2009.

ALCS Legend, Dave Stewart actually began his career in the National League with the Dodgers. Dave pitched for the Dodgers in 1978, then again from 1981-1983 until he was traded to the Rangers during '83 season. Dave had an 18-13 record in LA with an ERA of 3.33. He took 2 losses in the 1981 NLDS, but the Dodgers still got World Series rings that year. Dave would go on to become a postseason legend with the A's and the Blue Jays.

Probably the greatest closer in Dodger history, Eric Gagne wore #48 during his first 2 seasons back in 1999 & 2000. Gagne went on to spend 8 seasons as a Dodger stockpiling 161 saves and an ERA of 3.27. Gagne made 3 All Star teams while closing in LA.

The 21 year old phenom, Gavin Lux plowed his way through the minors this last season and ended up making a late season splash with the big club. Wearing #48, Lux batted .240 with 18 hits and 2 homers in his brief 75 at bat showing this year. He destroyed the minors with a .347 AVG, 26 HR and 76 RBI's. Potential to be the best to ever wear #48 for LA, but for right now the best to ever wear it is...

Ramon Martinez pitched for LA from 1988-1998 compiling a record of 123-77. He had an ERA of 3.45 and a WHIP of 1.283. Only once did Ramon make the NL All Star team, but I always thought he should have made more than that.

Ramon was always getting headlines, like this 1991 Score describes. He was an absolute strikeout machine.

If you didn't know, Ramon's brother was once a Dodger as well. I often wonder what would have happened had they kept Pedro around as well.

Best Dodger to ever wear #48.... for now.
