My Frankenset Project... An Unveiling


One of the very first things that got me interested in card collecting blogs was the dedication some bloggers put into this thing called "Frankensets". I don't know who coined the term, but the first one I remember seeing was Nick's over at Dime Boxes -- The Low-End Baseball Card Collector's Journey. I was fascinated by the time he spent carefully selecting eye catching cards for his Frankenset. 


I also remember Shoebox Legends BuyBack Frankenset. A daunting task indeed. And Rod over at Padrographs and his Autographed Frankenset. Another daunting venture. Hopefully by the time he sees this, he will be a good bit closer to his goal with his Frankenset. 


It all got me to thinking about what kind of Frankenset could I build? A Dodgers Frankenset would be ideal for me, but most of my Dodgers cards go straight into my yearly Dodgers binders. What then? A Hall of Fame Frankenset crossed my mind as well as a Topps Rookie Card Frankenset. That would be a tough one, but i bet it is possible.


Then it hit me. I've loved the 49ers since I was a kid watching Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott. I had a stash of 49ers cards lying around, because I used to try to collect everything. I thought to myself this would be a great way to get me to not give up on my 49ers collection, while at the same time trimming it to a manageable level. After all, I don't need to go all out on 49ers like I do the Dodgers.


So far, I'm 23 pages in. Football sets are usually alot smaller than baseball, but the older sets got pretty high. Most of my 49ers cards are numbered 1-300, but I can probably shoot for 35% of numbers 301-500 just with what I have here.


Within the next few days, I'll be posting ny needs 1-500. And if anyone else wants to do this with their team, get at me. I have tons of football cards I don't need from like 1988-2013. I'll be more than happy to help any of you out.

    Cardboard Junkie was the first time I read about a frankenset, probably around 2008 and 2009, and it was related to Allen & Ginter minis, which I've taken up and am still in the process of trying to complete.

Don't act like you know how much I wanted LJN's SportsTalk when I was a kid. Because you have no idea. I saw all the commercials. Saw them at the mall. Couldn't afford them. The player was like $25 if I remember correctly and packs of like 5 cards were $4. That was sacrificing alot of 50 cent per pack baseball back then, and alot of days not eating lunch at school so I could save that extra dollar. Valentine's Surprise from my Better Half

The last week and a half have been a blur. I took a promotion at work a few weeks back and it has really taken its toll on my free time. I haven't been posting. I haven't been commenting. I've been a bad blogger. I've also been neglecting packages from TCDB. I have piles of new Dodgers just waiting to be shown off here. Valentine's Day arrived and my better half really outdid herself with these amazing Dodger cookies she got made from a local baker. 1991 Topps... Vintage or Junk Wax

The other night, I busted a box of 1991 Topps hoping to score the remaining Dodgers I needed and an extra Dave Walsh and Dennis Cook to send out for ttm. I wasn't expecting anything special as I had opened many packs of these back in 1991, but about halfway through busting this box, I was thinking "Wow! This is a pretty good looking set." The photography in this set amazed me as I just did not remember it being this good. It really got me to thinking about the legacy of this set and how its tarnished by the whole junk wax era. 1991 Topps is gonna be turning 29 years old soon, and it's not junk.
